Saturday 6 May at 17.00 the International Mail Art Exhibition AMAZON ARCHIVE | Mail Art: gloCal answer to the global world by Ruggero Maggi curator Stefano Schiavoni, will be presented at the MAM Museum of Modern Art and Mail Art of Montecarotto.
Inauguration speeches from: the Mayor Giuseppe Paoloni, the Councilor for Culture Marta Giovannetti, the Director of MAM e curator Stefano Schiavoni, the critic Mauro Carrera and the artist Ruggero Maggi.
The MAM Museum of Modern Art and Mail Art of Montecarotto has been active since 1984. This museum was conceived and founded by Carlo Emanuele Bugatti with the Municipal Administration of Montecarotto, within an unprecedented project of a Widespread Museum on the territory of the then Provincial Authority of Ancona. In fact, the Museum collaborates historically and permanently with the MUSINF of Senigallia inaugurated in 1981, with the Nori dè Nobili Municipal Museum of Tre Castelli and with various other museums in the Marche region and Italy.
The exhibition summarizes Ruggero Maggi's activity in Mail Art, which began in 1975 and developed over the years with the conception and organization of projects focused on themes related to ecology, with particular reference to the safeguarding of the Amazon, Peace and the global disarmament, developed over the years through its Amazon Archive created in 1979.
The main exhibition will be dedicated to the M.A.D. Mail Art Day | 16 october | International Mail Art Day with which we want remember Ray Johnson, born on 16 October and defined as "the most famous unknown artist of New York" who, by founding the New York Correspondance School in 1962, marked with this explosive initial moment, the Big Bang of Mail Art.
During the inauguration of the exhibition, on May 6, in the spaces outside the Museum, "Shadow Project" will be carried out with the active involvement of both postal artists and the public, a collective action in which human silhouettes will be painted on the ground to remember, in addition that the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, even those caused by the current tragic war in Ukraine.
Other sections of the exhibition initiative realized at the MAM in Montecarotto retrace, also through the support of explanatory panels, some of the main themes addressed and developed over the years by Maggi and collected in his Amazon archive: those on the more specific theme of the Amazon ((with the projects Museum in home 1979; Amazon Archive 1980 at SixtoNotes in Milan; Amazonic Trip 1980 1st Mail Art exhibition in Peru, Amazonic Highways 1981 16th Biennial of Sao Paulo (BR). The Shadow Project was also presented in 1988 in Senigallia with the active collaboration of Stefano Schiavoni, Carlo Emanuele Bugatti (at the time Director of the Municipal Museum of Information MUSINF) and the artist Chiara Diamantini. Some other initiatives: Solidarte – United for the Peace and The Saga of Gina. Important was the Milan Art Center founded and directed by Maggi exactly fifty years ago who carried out an intense multimedia activity with particular reference to contemporary experimental research, Mail art, visual poetry and artist's books. The Mail Art Decentralized Congresses between 1986 and 1992. The between 1986 and 1992. The GenerAction and EARTH|rawmatter projects by Maggi and with the presentation of Emma Zanella realized in Gallarate at the MA*GA and the University of Melo with the support of Marco Predazzi, Benedetto Predazzi and Gabriele Illarietti and again the projects carried out at the Diotti Museum in Casalmaggiore: Card, The Amazon must live and Mail Art in Stars and Stripes with the support of Roberta Ronda and Valter Rosa respectively Director and Curator of the Museum. We will also remember, through photos and texts, personalities that Maggi defines as "infinite", such as GAC, Pierre Restany, Ray Johnson e Shozo Shimamoto and The long infinite line by Piero Manzoni mail art collective installation organized by Maggi and Paolo Barrile in 1992 and the Chaos/Chaotic Art Orderly Science project. The documentary part will consist of Mail Art publications such as Meta+Verse created by Maggi and Hans Braumüller, United in Mail Art written by Braumüller, Maggi, Clemente Padin, Chuck Welch. At last the projects 1962|2022 60 years of Mail Art presented in 2022 with the support of Poste Italiane in Saronno with the presentation of the professor Brera Academy Lorella Giudici, the Mail Art Pavilions dedicated to Tibet, Burma and Ukraine, the latter organized with the collaboration of SACS directed by Cristina Sosio; the Mail Art quintessence of creative communication exhibition at the Museum of Tasso family and Postal History in Camerata Cornello (BG) directed by Fabio Bonacina and the active collaboration with Sandro Bongiani creator of the Ophen Virtual Art Gallery of Salerno.
The catalog, published on the occasion of the tribute to Ruggero Maggi by MAM, summarizes this intense activity, with texts by Stefano Schiavoni, director of MAM and curator of the exhibition, by Emma Zanella, director of MA*GA, by the critic and historian of art Giosuè Allegrini, the art critic Matteo Galbiati, Silvio De Gracia director of the HOTELDADA Center in Argentina, Ryosuke Cohen and Andrej Tišma mailartists.
The exhibition is dedicated to Carla Bertola and Teo De Palma.
