Jaimeo Brown Transcendence & Samora Pinderhughes Transformation

Jazz and Social Justice Series: Songs of protest, hope, resistance, and social consciousness throughout history to the present day.

"The Transformations Suite is a five-part tone poem, arranged over meticulously arranged big band jazz instrumentals, with aims to provide a motivational and emotional engine to push forward the mission of Black Lives Matter " — Mic

Two young, innovative artists share this double bill, each blending razor-sharp socio-political commentary and historical awareness with an omnivorous approach to jazz – both with deep Bay Area connections. “An intensely thoughtful young pianist and composer,” (The New York Times) 25-year-old Samora Pinderhughes is an alumnus of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars program and a protégé of piano giant Kenny Barron, who mentored Pinderhughes while the budding keyboardist was a student at Julliard. Now a veteran of tours with Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott, and José James, New York-based Pinderhughes has built an impressive body of work, composing large-scale pieces for the Harlem Stage, the Museum of Modern Art, the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. His latest project, The Transformations Suite, is a multimedia work combining music, theatre, and poetry to examine the radical history of resistance within the communities of the African Diaspora.

Making his earliest memories while living on a Montana Native American reservation as a child, drummer Jaimeo Brown absorbed the influences of both the San Francisco jazz scene and the West Coast hip-hop culture during his youth, internalizing all those formative multicultural experiences that combined to became fundamental parts of his musical identity. Work with artists as diverse as Pharoah Sanders, Carlos Santana, Q-Tip, and Stevie Wonder, Brown released his groundbreaking 2013 Motéma album Transcendence, which married explosive instrumentals with field recordings of slave songs and the famous Gee’s Bend quilters of rural Alabama. His profoundly moving 2016 release, Work Songs, is devoted to songs of labor, from prison field hollers of the Deep South to the work-related folk songs of Japan and India.
