Volunteer Service – “Free the Trees” at Stroud Preserve

Join Natural Lands Trust staff and volunteers in helping “free the trees” at Stroud Preserve! We’ll cut invasive vines that threaten to choke young trees, focusing our efforts on a relatively-recently forested parcel of the 571-acre preserve. Oriental bittersweet is the main culprit, but we may remove other invasives too, including multiflora rose, bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, and others.

Volunteering with Natural Lands Trust is a great way to learn about habitats and wildlife, while helping steward natural resources and connecting with communities! We plant and advocate for native trees and shrubs to provide healthy habitat for birds, mammals and people too!

Note details below about this volunteer work project:

* Wear long pants and long sleeved shirt – Poison ivy and brambles are present year-round.
* Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots.
* Bring filled water bottle; we’ll have water coolers on hand.
* Be prepared to walk on uneven terrain, and get dirty.
* Lopers, hand tools and work gloves will be provided, or bring your own.

No experience necessary; instruction and tools will be provided. Suitable for ages 12+. Cookies and beverages provided. Volunteers contribute valuable time and talents to Natural Lands Trust – we greatly appreciate your hard-working efforts!

Note Directions and Parking: Volunteers should use the private entrance to Stroud Preserve and follow signs to park along the gravel road near the barnyard. (Parking at the public parking lot on Creek Road will require a long walk to meet the group!). Private entrance is on the west side of Stroud Preserve, at 449 Lucky Hill Road, one-half mile south of intersection with Strasburg Road/Route 162. The entrance is signed as private/deliveries only. Drive down the winding dirt road and follow signs for volunteer parking near the barn.

Volunteers will meet near the barnyard, gather hand tools, and walk to the work area about 10 minutes away. See our website for a map.

This effort is guided by Force of Nature® volunteer leaders as part of our ongoing Volunteer Service opportunities. Volunteers meet monthly at a Natural Lands Trust’s preserve, to assist with stewardship projects as needed.
