Vijay Iyer duo w/ Craig Taborn // SFJAZZ Center
A 2017-18 SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, Vijay Iyer curates four different nights of exclusive programming at the SFJAZZ Center.
“The most commanding pianist and composer to emerge in recent years,” (Village Voice) Vijay Iyer begins his season residency by inviting another of the jazz world’s most explorative and virtuosic pianists for this exclusive evening of duets. Craig Taborn established himself as a modern master through five expansive releases and pivotal sideman roles with Chris Potter, Roscoe Mitchell, James Carter, and David Binney. An artist as comfortable in straight-ahead situations as the furthest fringes of the avant-garde, Taborn has always built ensembles that are equally versatile and eclectic. In an recent feature in The New York Times, writer Adam Shatz wrote, “His playing inspires something rare in music today, a sense of wonder.” Taborn’s superb new ECM quartet session, Daylight Ghosts, features saxophonist Chris Speed, bassist Chris Lightcap, and Bad Plus drummer Dave King.
"There’s probably no frame wide enough to encompass the creative output of the pianist Vijay Iyer. " — The New York Times
