Vijay Iyer Sextet // SFJAZZ Center

A 2017-18 SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, Vijay Iyer curates four different nights of exclusive programming at the SFJAZZ Center.

"There’s probably no frame wide enough to encompass the creative output of the pianist Vijay Iyer. " — The New York Times

In a Bay Area premiere, pianist and composer Vijay Iyer augments his band with trio of horns that expands his music’s melodic and harmonic language. Cornetist Graham Haynes is a founder of Steve Coleman’s groundbreaking M-Base Collective and a major figure at the intersection of jazz, hip-hop, and the avant-garde. The son of drumming legend Roy Haynes, he’s led nearly a dozen albums and collaborated with Cassandra Wilson, The Roots, Bill Laswell, and David Murray, among others. Visionary alto saxophonist Steve Lehman leads a number of exploratory ensembles including his acclaimed Octet whose 2009 debut album, Travail, Transformation & Flow, was named Jazz Album of the Year by The New York Times. He is a member of the Fieldwork trio with Iyer and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, and has led or co-led thirteen sessions including his latest, Sélébéyone. Jamaica-born tenor saxophonist Mark Shim is a member of Lehman’s octet and an established bandleader, recording three albums for Blue Note. He has performed and recorded with a pantheon of greats including Elvin Jones, Betty Carter, Hamiett Bluiett, Mose Allison, Greg Osby, and the Mingus Big Band.
