Leonard Bernstein's 100th Birthday Celebration

"Bernstein at his most knowing and inventive, crafting smart, intricate monologues and sleek jazz-inflected music to go with them " — San Francisco Chronicle

Opera Parallèle and SFJAZZ join forces again, following SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Terrence Blanchard's sold out Champion: An Opera in Jazz, to celebrate the American Voice in opera. Honoring Leonard Bernstein and his 100th birthday with a brand new production of his seminal opera Trouble in Tahiti, Opera Parallèle ushers in another 100 years of opera by pairing Bernstein with SF’s own pre-eminent composer, Jake Heggie, and a production of At the Statue of Venus. In true OP fashion, Creative Director Brian Staufenbiel seamlessly links the two works with a before and after narrative that explores the struggles, victories, and revelations that occur in one’s quest for “happiness.” Using At the Statue of Venus as the Rose, the sole character in the chamber opera becomes Dinah from Trouble in Tahiti. We see what becomes of a young woman waiting for a blind date in a museum and what might happen after getting married and living the comfortable life of a housewife in suburban America. The orchestra of 21 musicians will be conducted by OP’s Artistic Director Nicole Paiement.
