G&S Academy: Magic 101

The very basics!

Who is this event for?

The Very Basics class is for those who have not played Magic before or only played a few games, but want to learn more.

What is covered during this class?

We’re going to take 15 minutes to cover the parts of a card, how to cast spells, the phases of a turn, and the steps of the combat phase. After this, judges will be present while learners practice with each other. They can help answer anything related to the game.

How long will we have to play each other?

Roughly an hour. The next class will start at 1:30.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing but a good attitude. Everyone there will be learning and mistakes will happen. Decks will be provided, which you get to keep. You can also take home a free booster pack for completing a few simple in-game achievements.

Entry: $5
Time: Noon

Intermediate-Level Magic!

Who is this event for?

Intermediate-Level Magic class is players who haven’t played in a competitive event before or those coming straight from The Very Basics class at noon.

What is covered during this class?

We’re going to take 15 minutes to cover “the stack”, different kinds of abilities, costs versus effects, and more. After this, judges will be about, available to answer any questions.

How long will we have to play each other?

Roughly an hour. The next class will start at 3:00.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing but a good attitude. Everyone there will be learning and mistakes will happen. Decks will be provided, which you get to keep. These decks, unlike those used in The Very Basics class, will be 60 cards and two-colors, facilitating more complex play.

Entry: $5
Time: 1:30 PM

Deck-Building!

Who is this event for?

The Deck-Building class is players who haven’t built a deck themselves yet, want to learn a little more about building a deck, or are coming straight from Intermediate-Level Magic.

What is covered during this class?

We’re going to take 15 minutes to cover the colors of Magic, some deck archetypes, the three simple parts of a basic deck, and more!

How long will we have to play each other?

There won’t be a set time for learners to start playing each other because deck-building will take longer for some that others and since this is the final class of the series, players can hang out until we close.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing but a good attitude. Everyone there will be learning and mistakes will happen. Deck-builder’s toolkits (MSRP $19.99) will be provided and judges will be present to help everyone with the deck-building process.

Entry: $20
Time: 3:00 PM
